Joy Markley
Joy Markley, 76, died peacefully at her home in Ice Mountain on March 1, 2016 surrounded by her family. Joy graduated from the Washington Hospital School of Nursing, working as a nurse in hospital, physician office and public health settings and ultimately retiring as a registered nurse with the Hampshire County Committee on Aging. Joy was a dedicated wife and mother who consistently volunteered with her children’s many activities. Joy enjoyed quilting, and was a member of the Apple Valley Needle Threaders and the Slanesville Sew and Sews. Joy was also a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, and she attended North River Mills United Methodist Church. Joy is survived by her husband of 50 years, Bob, her children Lauren and Brian, four grandchildren, three brothers and a sister, among other family.

Pete Blauvelt
Ice Mountain resident Pete Blauvelt, 80, passed away on March 2, 2016. Following his service in the Army, Pete obtained his degree from the University of Maryland. Pete had a long career in law enforcement, including service as Director of School Security for the Prince George’s County school system, and he was also an author and consultant. Pete was actively involved in the community, including through the United Methodist Church, Rotary International, Ruritan and Warm the Children. According to his family, wherever Pete went, he “made people laugh with … a joke, a word of deep wisdom, and the warm of his presence. If you knew him, you were the better for it.” Pete, who was predeceased by his youngest child, Jeffrey, is survived by his wife of 59 years, Louise, his children, Michael and Laura, four grandchildren and other extended family.
